  1. A meltdown is the melting of the core of a 
  2. nuclear reactor, due to overheating. To 
  3. prevent such accidents all reactors have 
  4. equipment intended to flood the core with 
  5. water in an emergency. The reactor is housed 
  6. in a strong containment vessel, designed to 
  7. prevent radiation escaping into the
  8. atmosphere.
